November 7, iStock. Read on to hear tips from longtime readers who have been through it—and managed to come out on the other side of a good book.
See below for more information on him and his writings and upcoming events at the KV Memorial Library. The book was far from an immediate success and took seven years to sell out.
Always imaginative, RB demanded that 50 of the books be bound in asbestos covers. Eller has examined some of these and warned those who might have a chance to look at them to wear gloves and a mask as handling them releases a small cloud of asbestos dust.
Another tidbit he shared was that Mel Brooks owns the film rights to F but there seem to be no film in development. Inhe relented and authorized an e-book version of F Eller comes to visit us often. How did RB regard himself, someone wanted to know.
Eller believed that RB was aware of his limitations. Having been an avid reader from childhood, he was a first rate stylist of the English Language. He accomplished this without ever spending a day in college.
Wikipedia tells me that RB knew as a child that his he would make his living in the arts. Eller had discussed this with RB who said that it was just serendipity as he no particular association in mind. Literary analysis can be a bummer. I like the idea that Montag is the German translation for Monday, the first day when God created the heavens and the Earth.
At the end of the novel, Montag is marching toward a destroyed civilization ready to start a new world. RB hated censorship, but according to Eller he had no staff to check up on the dozens of printings of his works.
RB thought about suing, but settled for an assurance that his coda would be included in all future editions. There did not seem to be any meaningful censorship of his ideas. In a democratic society, censorship of the arts is not from the top down.
Rather it arises from a populace that sees danger in the written word. You have to suspend your disbelief or visions of them promptly dying from radiation sickness will sidetrack you.
Best to think of F as a fable. Did RB ever expand on this idea? The metaphor is seemingly about Truth which is filtered by the Brain.
It comes up twice in this long chapter.
First when Montag is a child and is frustrated when he cannot fill the sieve with sand as challenged by a playmate. RB is telling us that in his dystopia the immediacy of TV and electronic media will interfere with mental tasks involving concentration.
How were libraries going to be recreated in the new world? Dave wondered if there was a religious subtext to F The emotional impact of literature to be avoided in this dystopia is apparent when Mrs. Perhaps RB, like KV, had no truck with organized religion but felt that religiosity might aid the formation of more meaningful communities.
And the work ends with a paraphrase of Ecclesiastes 3 a catalog of timely events and a quote from Revelations 22 the return to the Garden of Eden. Eller noted that the books Montag hid in his home concerned Shakespeare and not the bible.Kurt Vonnegut found my lost love of reading and now I am proud to say I am a Vonegut junkie.
